Booking & Pricing

How much is it to hire a car in Zanzibar?+

Car hire in Zanzibar starts from $25 USD per day with Kizingo Cars. The exact rate depends on the vehicle type, the duration of hire, and the time of year — a 4WD costs more than a standard saloon, and longer rentals typically attract better daily rates. Visit our car rental prices page for a full breakdown.

Can I modify or cancel my reservation?+

Yes. Contact us by phone or email to modify or cancel your booking. We recommend notifying us at least 48 hours before your scheduled pickup to avoid any cancellation fees.

How far in advance should I book?+

We recommend booking at least 3 to 5 days in advance, especially during peak tourist season (June–October and December–January). Booking early guarantees your preferred vehicle and gives us time to prepare your Zanzibar driving permit.

Driving in Zanzibar

Is it worth renting a car in Zanzibar?+

Absolutely. Having your own car lets you explore Zanzibar's beaches, historic sites, and villages at your own pace — without depending on taxis or fixed tour schedules. You can reach spots like Nungwi, Kendwa, and Jozani Forest whenever you like. With rates starting from $25 USD per day, it is also one of the most cost-effective ways to get around. Check out things to do in Zanzibar to start planning your trip.

Is it recommended to drive in Zanzibar?+

Yes, driving in Zanzibar is recommended for most tourists comfortable with left-hand traffic. It gives you total freedom to visit beaches, spice farms, Stone Town, and Jozani Forest on your own schedule. Main roads are paved and well-maintained. For those who prefer not to drive, our chauffeur service is always an option.

What type of vehicle is recommended for Zanzibar roads?+

For paved main roads between towns and beach resorts, standard saloons and small SUVs are perfectly suitable. For exploring village tracks, remote areas, or travelling during the rainy season (March–May and November), a 4WD is strongly recommended. Our fleet includes both options — read our Zanzibar car hire guide for help choosing the right vehicle.

Is it safe to self-drive in Zanzibar?+

Yes, self-driving in Zanzibar is safe for most tourists. Traffic is relatively light outside Stone Town. Key points: traffic drives on the left, speed limits are 50 km/h in towns and 80 km/h on open roads, rural roads can be narrow and unpaved, and we advise caution when driving in unfamiliar areas after dark. Our self-drive guide covers everything you need to know before you set off.

Which side of the road do you drive on in Zanzibar?+

Traffic in Zanzibar (Tanzania) drives on the left side of the road. All rental vehicles have right-hand drive steering wheels.

What if the rental car breaks down?+

Call our emergency support line, available 24 hours a day. We will arrange roadside assistance or a replacement vehicle as quickly as possible. All Kizingo Cars vehicles are regularly serviced and inspected to minimise the risk of any breakdown.

Insurance & Accidents
