You need a valid driver's license from your home country and a valid passport. A credit or debit card is also required to cover the refundable security deposit. We handle the Zanzibar driving permit on your behalf.

The exact rate depends on the vehicle type, the duration of hire, and the time of year — a 4WD costs more than a standard saloon, and longer rentals typically attract better daily rates. Driving in Zanzibar
Absolutely. Having your own car lets you explore Zanzibar's beaches, historic sites, and villages at your own pace — without depending on taxis or fixed tour schedules. You can reach spots like Nungwi, Kendwa, and Jozani Forest whenever you like. With rates starting from $25 USD per day, it is also one of the most cost-effective ways to get around. Yes, driving in Zanzibar is recommended for most tourists comfortable with left-hand traffic. It gives you total freedom to visit beaches, spice farms, Stone Town, and Jozani Forest on your own schedule. Main roads are paved and well-maintained. For those who prefer not to drive, our chauffeur service is always an option.
For paved main roads between towns and beach resorts, standard saloons and small SUVs are perfectly suitable. For exploring village tracks, remote areas, or travelling during the rainy season (March–May and November), a 4WD is strongly recommended. Our fleet includes both options — read our Zanzibar car hire guide for help choosing the right vehicle.

Key points: traffic drives on the left, speed limits are 50 km/h in towns and 80 km/h on open roads, rural roads can be narrow and unpaved, and we advise caution when driving in unfamiliar areas after dark. Our self-drive guide covers everything you need to know before you set off.
